The Italian Division of the "Fakulti Bahasa dan Linguistik (FBL) - Universiti Malaya", was established in 2003 as a result of the effort of the Italian Embassy, which highlighted the growing importance of Italian in modern day Malaysian society, especially when considering the mutual trade relationships between Italy and Malaysia.

Every year, approximately half a million students, all over the world, attend Italian classes outside Italy.
